Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary

| Sal Forest |
This small but beautiful sanctuary is located close to and about 12 km. from
the district town of Bhawanipatna in Kalahandi district covering a dense patch
of lush green dry deciduous forest. This sanctuary lies on either side of
Bhawanipatna-Thuamul Rampur road and drained by Sagada river and its smaller
tributaries.
A beautiful waterfall near the river on the outskirts of this sanctuary called
Phulijharan has been developed as a picnic spot for the local visitors and
draws large number of visitors from far of places.There are also two other
small water falls. This sanctuary was notified under the Wildlife (Protection)
Act. in 1992. The undulated topography of the sanctuary, with hills, valleys
and perennial stream with deep water pools present perfect symphony of nature.

MODE OF APPROACH
The sanctuary is situated at a distance of 25km frc Bhawanipatna and 570km
form Bhubaneswar. Tnearest Railway Station is Kesinga on Raipi Vizayanagaram
line of E.Co. Railway (52km.)

FLORA
The forest consists of Sal with its association such as Bija, Asan, Harida,
Kangada, Amla, Harida,Bahada, Karada, Sidha and.Kumbhi. The hills have scattered
shrubby growths such as Bhuin-Khajuri,Dom kurdu, Atundi lata, Lata barkoli
and varieties of grasses including pure bamboo forests in extensive areas.
FAUNA
The major wildlife include Tiger, Leopard, Black panther (this is now becoming
extremely rare)Elephant, Wild pig, Sloth bear, Gaur, Sambar,Pangolin, Barking
deer, Malabar giant squirrel, Mouse deer, Tiger, Leopard, Indian Wolf, Common
Palm civet, Wild dog, Jungle cat, varieties of birds like Peafowl, Hombill,
Red jungle fowl, Spurfowl,Patridges, Hill myna, Brahminy kite, etc. and reptilian
fauna includes Mugger crocodile, Monitor lizards,snakes-both poisonous and
non- poisonous.

ACCOMMODATION
Number of government accommodations is available at Bhawanipatna and at Sagada.
A Forest Rest House is located at Jakom inside the sanctuary.

COMMUNICATION
A wireless communication system covering all important points within and around
the sanctuary has been established. During emergency this communication network
will usually be available to multi-day trekkers through the established base
stations. At present the VHF Base Stations of the communication network in
Karlapat are located at places like Junagarh, Ampani, Daspur.
